Redhill Allotments
Clearing the plot when I first arrivedA message from Iris O'Toole, Site Steward

Name Iris O'Toole, age - not telling you.

This is my fifth year on Red Hill Allotments. When I arrived there were about 20 working plots.

There have been allotments on the site for over forty years, I have been told there were originally around 300 plots with three stewards helping to look after the site and a waiting list for plots.

Following the decline of allotments in general Leicester City Council decided to close several sites and improve those that were left.

Some of my first years cropsRed Hill was cut down to around half it's original size, but thanks to lots of hard work from people joining the site and help from members of the other sites in the Belgrave Allotment Society we now have 60 free choice plots as well as 23 organic plots with room left for more.

I became Site Steward in 2007 and I have found the position rewarding and challenging.

During my time on the allotments I have made many new friends and acquaintences. My hope is that the friendly community spirit that has been generated on the site will continue for years to come making Red Hill a productive green space for present and future generations.
